Although his real name is Akiong, he sounds better by Neoh (which, by the way, is his family name). As he is into coffee business, analogies to relationship often pop up into my head, and that day the similarity was clear: good coffee is like relationship ~ rich, warm and strong. We have a deeply-entrenched belief in our culture that love should be easy; that the day you had your first kiss and you know he is the one, you should know how to love and be loved; that you should understand your partner’s needs, likes, and dislikes and both sides should understand one another immediately. We think it should “just work” (just like you should “just know” if she is “the one”).
Like coffee needs hot water to be brewed, love needs passion for warmth. Like coffee needs the perfect timing to get the rich taste, love needs the time to grow. Like any good coffee is sipped and gives you a smile, a kiss will do too.
But perhaps we don’t need to be a barista if we had been taught the skills of love before we got married. We can find our way by floundering and learning from our successes and failures, but it would be so much less scary and more effective if we had someone to show us the way. Perhaps we’re not meant to make “that cup of coffee” alone.
Sometimes, it would be great if we learned how to love like we learned how to drive a car. Don’t you think that it would be a different world if we learned the skills of loving like we learned maths, literature and science? Love is a skill that could be learned and practised with two people learning to “brew, time and sip” rightly toward each other. –Juvenco Pelupessy
