Every wedding has a story. It usually isn’t told in the design of the dress or the Pinterest perfect decorations. The story lies beneath all the careful planning and the high expectations of the day. They are the simple moments, the quiet corners, the small gestures, and the hilarious goofs that aren’t disclosed in the perfectly staged wedding photos. These are the stories we tell and retell over family dinners. We laugh and even shed a few tears over these anecdotes. They complete our total wedding narratives.
I have shot hundreds of weddings and each event had its own saga: Once I shot a ceremony ran almost a half an hour late because the ring bearer was stuck in traffic on the rush hour. Then there was a wedding, the groomsmen had a nervous breakdown that he had to sit and I found myself calming him down before he realised that marrying his best friend would be the best decision he could ever make. There was even a ceremony short enough that as the bride walked down the aisle, she asked her husband, “Was that too short?” He responded, “It’s too late now!”
I will never forget a particular wedding with the quiet moment I had with the bride and her mother before she walked her down the aisle to meet her future husband. She gently stroke her hair, lifting her chin up and smiled. It was definitely her moment. This particular wedding would be Rudy & Sri’s. Sri’s mother had been a single parent and had been raising her as a very strong independent woman as Sri is the only child. Even through that very moment I could see both Sri & her mother were trying to be strong for each other, holding back their tears as a affirmation that they both will be alright.
I always tell people every wedding is beautiful. The bride is beautiful. The bridesmaids are beautiful. The venue is beautiful. Everything is beautiful. I truly believe wedding is never about the huge ceremony in a church. A reception in a hall with family and friends wasn’t necessary. All a wedding require is the bride & groom having each other and that suffices. I have shot so many precious and funny memories from weddings, but my favorite is the look on every couple’s faces as they said their vows, especially on Rudy & Sri’s wedding. I saw their future both in tears, and now ten years later I’d still catch my breath when I gaze into these pictures. I never knew I could be this content.
At the end of the day, wedding stories are just prologues. The rest of the tale is up to the main characters.
