It is easy to get saddled by emotion when witnessing a childbirth. Garrix’s is no difference. In fact, Garrix’s childbirth gripped me in several ways. I was called by Syerli at 6 in the morning informing me that it was time, the contraction had begun! Not wanting to miss anything precious, I grabbed my camera and hurried to the hospital. When I got there, the anxious couple greeted me with wide smiles. I smiled back and was extremely pleased that I didn’t miss anything. The birthing was definitely happening but it was a slow one. During that time, families started arriving and as they chatted, the tension in the room gradually thickened as the contraction began to get closer and tougher. It was a gold moment to me because I got to immortalize these raw, real moments of a childbirth procedure. Already, I knew this would come out great , I was right. It was late afternoon by the time Syerli was fully dilated and the doctor announced they were ready to start. Visitors were led to wait outside the delivery room. Everybody was wearing a similar anxious expression on their faces. We had been waiting for this moment and now that it was here, it felt surreal. Aryang’s mother broke into tears when Syerli started pushing and I could see she was worried for both her daughter-in-law and grandson. After what felt like forever, Garrix’s powerful cry announced his presence and from then on, the tears coming out were happy ones. Garrix was a healthy baby boy with a mop of black hair on his tiny head. His fingers and toes were curling in all tens. The proud parents even smiling one ear to another. As we huddled closer, everybody agreed he was perfect.
That night, I left the hospital with similar feeling I felt whenever I finished a childbirth gig – overwhelmed and gratified. It felt as if I just went through an out of body experience and in a way, I probably I did. It made me feel endlessly grateful and honored that my clients entrust me with this very special moment of their lives and further increase my respect for all parents who bravely go through such life threatening process to bring a life into this world. To Aryang and Syerli, Thankyou for the trust.
