Sessions with babies always gave off certain adrenaline rush a photographer alone could understand: they let you had a few golden chances to capture their most photogenic move, one snap and it’s gone. No replay.
As sneaky as how most of them could be, babies simply didn’t understand that some moments, which after they were born, were too precious to be left unrecorded. For that reason here in my frame was baby Candyce with her family trusting me to shoot one of their once-in-a-lifetime celebration, like for instance, their daughter first birthday.
Taking Candyce’s portraits were a little bit harder at first, but well… you don’t just pose shamelessly to any strangers, do you? Dressing up as the ‘Alice in Wonderland’, her expression began to light up when she was having fun with the cake laid out in front of her, then magic worked after Candyce saw balloons and pillows swarming into the studio. In seconds, what had been a tricky situation transformed into an effortless baby photoshoot.
Candyce’s joyful expressions have reminded me the wonder of childhood that often created smiles and laughter. Those wonders might fade along with the beginning of adulthood, laughter will mostly be unheard, genuine smiles might become rare as life goes on, but I knew it was my shots that would give the future Candyce and family a beautiful reminiscent of little Alice in Sheerss.
